Existing within the
Freeport LNG marine terminal area is the Seaburn and Bowers families’ cemetery
dating to the mid-1800s. The Seaburns began homebuilding
and shipbuilding businesses in Quintana in the days of the Republic
of
Texas, and the cemetery is one of the last vestiges of the early
seafaring history of the area. This cultural resource is being
protected through a Cemetery Protection Plan that was developed
by Freeport
LNG. Visitors to the site are escorted by Freeport LNG security
staff and allowed to view the markers that have been placed in
memory of
family members.
Previous archeological work had identified components of the old
townsite of Quintana that was damaged extensively in hurricanes in
1875 and 1900.
